Ryuko Hira’s
President Kovind awards Shri Ryuko Hira for Trade and Industry the Padma Shri. He is the president of the Japanese Ora Group of Companies and the HMI Hotel Group, and he has promoted Japanese investment in India.
Who is Ryuko Hira?
Kamlesh Punjabi is Ryuko Hira’s real name and he was born in Jaipur. He is the chairman of the Ora Group of Companies and a well-known businessman from Japan. Hira is the founder and owner of numerous such companies. Hira obtained a degree in gemmology from the Gemmological Institute of America and a certificate in Japanese from Sophia University in Tokyo.
Hira, who was born in 1948 in Jaipur, graduated from Mumbai’s Sitaram Prakash High School. Subsequently, he took a 12-week course at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration and took Japanese language classes at Sophia University in Tokyo. He graduated from the Institute of Sathya Sai Education in Prasanthi Nilayam, Andhra Pradesh, with a diploma in character development.
Hira himself came to Japan in 1966, but his family had established a company in Yokohama back in 1921 that exported Japanese silk to India before he did. Hira, once Kamlesh Punjabi, wed a Japanese woman, naturalized as a Japanese citizen, and took the name Ryuko Hira.
He established the HMI Hotel group in 1991 which manages about 60 resort and business hotels in Japan
