Dr Ratan Chandra Kar, 66 years old, is a physician who practises in the state of Andaman and Nicobar. A retired government physician from the Andaman Islands named Dr Ratan Chandra Kar works with the Jarawa people on an island 48 kilometres away from North Sentinel. He provided medical care to the Jawaras during the 1999 measles outbreak, which helped to boost their number from 76 to 270 and save them from extinction. His book The Jarawas of the Andamans also made careful observations and documented their culture and traditions.
