In the presence of ongoing protests across the country over the Agneepath scheme, The Union Minister made the announcement of the Agneepath scheme on June 14, provides for the recruitment of youths between the age bracket of 17-and-half years to 21 for four years with a provision to retain 25% of them. Due to the covid 19, the government later increased the upper age limit to 23 only for this year.

According to the latest announcement by the Ministry, the upper age limit for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) – inclusive of Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), National Security Guard (NSG) and Special Protection Group (SPG) – will stand at 26 years.

Meanwhile, the first batch of Agniveers will receive a 5-year extension beyond the upper age limit of 23, bringing it to 28 years.

What is Agniveer Scheme?

It is a new HR Management scheme for the Indian Armed Forces. The candidates recruited through this scheme will be called Agniveers. Once enrolled, they will be governed under the Acts of the respective Armed Forces, Army, Navy and Air Force. They will get a distinct rank in the respective Armed Forces that will be different from the existing ranks.

Every Agniveer will be required to sign documents accepting the Agnipath Scheme’s terms and conditions. If the Agniveer is under the age of 18 at the time of enrollment, the document will be signed by the parent or guardian.

The Agnipath scheme will initially recruit for a four-year period. Following that, based on the requirements and policies of the respective Armed Forces, up to 25% of Agniveers from any given batch will be offered a regular recruitment position based on their performance during their four-year engagement period with the Armed Forces. The remaining 75% of Agniveers will successfully integrate into society.
