The National Equine Research Center (NRCE) was established during the 7th Five Year Plan under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to study equine health and production considering the importance of horses in India.
The National Equine Research Center, Bikaner Campus, was established on September 28, 1989 to conduct research on improving technologies for optimizing the production potential of horses. The campus features state-of-the-art laboratories for research in equine genetics, nutrition, medicine, reproduction and management. The center is responsible for generating horse performance enhancement technologies to improve the socioeconomic status of poor horse owners. The conservation and propagation of equidae through ecotourism has recently begun. The Marwari elite of Rajasthan, Kathiawari horses of Gujarat, Zanskari horses of Ladakh and Manipuri horses of Manipur and Poitou donkeys of France are bred here. A horse information center and museum have been developed to show the basic technical details of the horses. Sperm cryopreservation, artificial insemination, equine ultrasound and endoscopy are routinely performed here.
