The Indian government honored Shri Savaji Bhai Dholakia with the Padma Shri in 2022 for his achievements in the field of social welfare. He is a former businessman who is now a water conservationist in the Saurashtra region, which is prone to drought.
Who is Savji Dholakia ?
Savji Dholakia was born in Dudhala, Gujarat’s Amreli district, to a farming family. He completed fourth-grade coursework before quitting at the age of 13. He started working for his paternal uncle in Surat’s diamond company. Later, he was joined by his brothers Himmat and Tulsi, and the three of them started the diamond business in 1984. In 1992, their eldest brother Ghanshyam teamed up with them and established a diamond export office in Mumbai. By 2014, the business had grown to become a significant diamond exporter with 6500 staff members.
