Gosaveedu Shaik Hassan, a nadaswaram exponent who dedicated his life to the historical Sri Seetha Ramachandra Swamy Temple at Bhadrachalam, will be conferred with Padma Shri (posthumously) in 2022.

Gosaveedu Shaik Hassan was born on 1 January 1928 in Gosaveedu, Gooden Mandal, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh as the last child of Meera Saheb and Hasan Bee. He started playing music at the age of eight. At the age of 14, the British authorities imprisoned him for chanting slogans against them. However, they liked his music and voice and released him from prison. He learned instrumental music at Chilakaluripet, Guntur district from renowned musician Sheik Chinna Moulana and vocal music from renowned singer M. Balamurali Krishna’s father Mangalampalli Pattabhiramaiah. He had also played Nadaswaram at Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati.

In addition to instructing several music pupils, he has participated in the yearly Tyagaraja Aradhana festival at Tiruvaiyaru in the Thanjavur region of Tamil Nadu regularly for about seven decades. This is the location where Tyagaraja attained Samadhi. In 1962, the festival’s organizers gave him a gold bracelet, and in 2007, they gave him the Thyagaraja Paraskar Award. 

On June 23, 2021, Shaik Hassan passed away. In 2022, the Indian government presented him with the Padma Shri award as a posthumous tribute.
