Who is Dr Sirpi Balasubramaniam ?
Tamil poet, critic, academic, and professor Sirpi Balasubramaniam hails from Tamil Nadu in India. In the Coimbatore District’s Aaththupollachi hamlet, Balasubramaniam was born. His Ph.D. is from Madras University, while his MA is from Annamalai University. He was a lecturer at Pollachi’s NGM College. Later, he was appointed a professor at Bharathiar University’s Tamil department. He finally rose to the position of Department head. In the 1970s, he was a founding member of the literary Vanambadi movement. He also published another literary journal named Annam vidu thoothu in addition to the movement’s flagship publication of the same name. In the course of his creative career, he has produced more than a dozen poems and pieces of literary criticism.
He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil in 2003 for his collection of poems, Oru Giraamattu Nadhi. His translation of Agnisakshi by Lalithambika Antharjanam into Tamil earned him the Sahitya Akademi’s award for translators in 2001. He currently serves as the Tamil advisory board’s convener for the Akademi.
