Arjun Singh Dhurve of the Dindori district, a folk artist and retired teacher has been awarded Padma Shri for the primary dance of the Baiga tribe is the Baiga dance.

Who is Arjun Singh Dhurve ?

Arjun Singh Dhurve was born on August 12, 1952, in New Delhi, India, to Parsa Singh Dhurve and Laharo Bai Dhurve. He holds both an MA in sociology and a B Ed in education. He was the first member of the Baiga tribe to get a graduate degree. In 1976, he began working as an assistant teacher. He retired from teaching in 2015 after being promoted to a higher grade teacher in 1994 and head teacher in 2008.

The Baiga dance has been performed frequently both inside and outside of Madhya Pradesh by Arjun Singh and his group. Arjun Singh and his group performed the Baiga Pradini dance at India Gate in New Delhi during the Republic Day Parade in 2005. Additionally, he delivered the speech at the homes of Dr. Manmohan Singh and former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
