Padma Shri Sulochana Chavan
President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Padma Shri Award to veteran singer Sulochana Chavan. Sulochana Chavan is a well-known Marathi singer who performs a number of well-known Lavani songs. Tuzhya Usala Laagal Kolha, “Padarawarti Jartaricha,” both from the 1965 movie “Malhari Martand,” “Solaawa Varees Dhokyacha,” and “Kasa Kay Patil Bara Hay Ka?” both from the 1964 movie “Sawaal Majha Aika!” are some of her most well-known Lavani songs.
In addition, Chavan was given the title “Lavanisamradhni” (Queen of Lavani) for her contribution to the art form of singing.
Who is Sulochana Chavan ?
Sulochana Kadam was born in Mumbai on March 13, 1933. Shé became Sulochana Chavan after she wed S. Chavan, the director of the movie Kalgitura. Her husband is responsible for teaching her the fundamentals of pronunciation and stress.
Sulochana began her professional life at a very young age. She used to participate in local dramas when she was 6-7 years old, portraying Krishna in garbas. She thereafter began performing in Gujarati theatre. She participated in Hindi-Urdu plays and attended Urdu language courses. She also contributed to some Tamil and Punjabi movies. Makeup artist Shubam Dandekar recommended her to music director Shyam Babu Pathak. She subsequently began accompanying her mother to V. Shantaram’s Rajkamal Studios for singing lessons. Chavan started singing professionally when she was 11 years old. After her maiden surname Kadam, she was given the name K. Sulochana.
Her very first Lavani “Hashyala Naav Gaav Kashyala Pustat? Mala Ho Mhantat Lavangi Mirchi, Aaho Me Aahe Kolhapurchi “for the movie Rangalya Raatri Asha, which lyrics were written by Jagdish Khebudkar and whose melody was composed by Vasant Pawar. Later on, Chavan performed on stage and sang numerous lavanis in Hindi and Marathi films.
