Who is Dr. Madhuri Barthwal?
Dr. Madhuri Barthwal has been trying to preserve and promote Uttarakhand folk music. She taught music at a college for several years after graduating. She was writing music for All India Radio in Naziabad during her free time. She developed into an outspoken supporter of Uttarakhand’s folk music, and she founded the radio program “Dharohar,” which was devoted to the area’s history and folk music. She is said to be familiar with every musical instrument used in Uttarakhand. She has helped in the recording of other performers’ music.
In addition to the many hundreds of students she taught, she also motivated a number of them to pursue careers as musicians. She has performed with Narendra Singh Negi, a fellow Garhwali musician. Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, presented Barthwal with the Nari Shakti Puraskar in honour of the sixty years she has devoted to music, broadcasting, and education. She “devoted her life” to the preservation of music, according to the citation.
