She serves as the director of the Indian Statistical Institute and is well known for her work in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computational biology.
Who is Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay?

Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, an Indian computer scientist with a focus on computational biology, was born in 1968. She is a professor at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata and the recipient of several awards, including the TWAS Prize for Engineering Sciences in 2018 and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Science in 2010.
Her research focuses primarily on evolutionary computation, pattern recognition, machine learning, and bioinformatics. She has served as the Indian Statistical Institute’s director since August 1, 2015, and as its first female director, she is responsible for the administration of the institute’s five centers, which are located in Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, and Tezpur, as well as numerous other Statistical Quality Control & Operation Research Units spread throughout India. She currently serves on the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Science, Technology, and Innovation. The Indian government presented her with the Padma Shri award for science and engineering in 2022.
