T Senka Ao the Padma Shri for his outstanding service

The fourth highest civilian honour in the nation was finally given to T Senka Ao of Nagaland, who was one of the 107 recipients of the “Padma Shri” for the year 2022. He received recognition for his contributions to education and literature.

Senka received the honour as a “Tribal Ao Author, Teacher, and Journalist – preserving Nagaland’s Ao language through his writings over decades”
T. Senka Ao has received congratulations from state chief minister Neiphiu Rio on getting the Padma Shri Award. Rio stated in a tweet, “We cherish your contributions and we are immensely pleased with your achievements. The Vice President of India, the Prime Minister, the Union Minister for Home Affairs, and other dignitaries were present when the Awards were given out.

Senka Ao, a journalist from the Indian state of Nagaland, was born on June 6, 1945. The “Ao Milen,” the first newspaper in Nagaland founded in 1933 and the first newspaper ever to be published in the local Ao language, is where Senka Ao is most known for his work as Editor-in-Chief. Senka Ao invented the “Alokba” character under his editorship, which is known for its amusing commentary on social and political topics.

Senka Ao has written nine novels in the Ao language and several articles for various magazines. The English translation of two of his books, Kongro Lijen (The Abode of the Maidens) and Kishi Tezulen (Off the Doorway), is now underway. The Ao language curriculum for the ICSE and ISC Board New Delhi as well as the Nagaland Board of School Education includes Senka Ao’s books up to class 10. He oversees the Arrangtet Examination, the highest level of Ao language certification.
