One of the highest civilian honors in the nation, the Padma Awards, is given out in three different categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The Awards are presented in a variety of sectors, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, business and industry, medical, literature and education, sports, and civil service. Every year, on Republic Day, the winners are announced.

The President has given his approval for the presentation of 107 Padma Awards this year. Women make up 34 of the honorees.

What does Padma Shri Mean?

Padma Shri also spelled Padma Shree, is the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is conferred in recognition of “distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the arts, education, industry, literature, science, acting, medicine, social service, and public affairs”. It is awarded by the Government of India every year on India’s Republic Day.

In order to recognise Indian individuals who have made outstanding contributions in a variety of fields, including the arts, education, business, literature, science, acting, medicine, social service, and public affairs, the Padma Awards were established in 1954. It has also been given to some deserving people who weren’t Indian nationals but nevertheless made significant contributions to India in a variety of ways.

Although the selection criteria for the “Padma” awards have been criticized in the past for appearing to favor certain individuals over others, India has now created an online platform that allows common citizens to nominate deserving artists. This change should help to ensure that a wider range of artists are considered for the prestigious annual award.

On its obverse, the words “Padma”, meaning lotus in Sanskrit, and “Shri”, a Sanskrit-derived honorific equivalent to ‘Mr.’ or ‘Ms.’ (i.e., “Noble One in Blossom”), appear in Devanagari above and below a lotus flower. The geometrical pattern on either side is in burnished bronze. All embossing is in white gold.
