The Government of India has decided to posthumously confer the Padma Shri award to the eminent scholar of Nagpuri literature, Dr. Girdhari Ram Gaunjhu. He breathed his last in RIMS due to difficulty in breathing. Apart from his wife, he is survived by two sons and a daughter. For his special contribution to the field of literature and education, Giridhari Ram Gaunjhu has been given the Padma Shri.

Dr. Giridhari Ram Gonjhu, a renowned author and the former director of Ranchi University’s tribal and regional language program, passed away in April 2017 from a respiratory condition. He has been nominated posthumously for the Padma Shri award in the categories of literature and education.

One of the well-known composers from Jharkhand was the late Giridhari Ram Gonjhu, also known as “Giriraj.” He was a fluent speaker of Hindi and Nagpuri. His creation was readily a reflection of Jharkhand’s sensibility. Dr. Giridhari Ram Gonjhu was born on December 5, 1949, in Belvadag, Khunti district, and his life was full of hardship.

He finished his MA, BEd, LLB, and Ph.D. after completing his undergraduate studies at Khunti. His published works include Khukdi-Rugda, Nagpuri Gad Tairangan, Kori Bhar Pazhra, etc. Numerous magazines have carried his articles.
