At a ceremony held on March 21, 2022, at the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), was presented with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, by the Honorable President of India, Shri Ramnath Kovind. Because of her outstanding contributions to literature and education, Najma Akhtar was given this accolade by the Government of India. Her son Saad Akhtar was present at the award ceremony, and her daughter Farha Khan also attended the occasion.

Who is Prof. Najma Akhtar?

Najma Akhtar (born in 1953) is an Indian academic and academic administrator. Since April 2019, she has been the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, an Indian university. She is also the first woman to hold the post in JMI.

In 1953, Akhtar was born. She received a National Science Talent Scholarship and won a gold medal while attending Aligarh Muslim University. She graduated from Kurukshetra University with a Ph.D. in education. She trained at the International Institute of Educational Planning in Paris and was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship to study university administration at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.

The appointment of Akhtar as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia for a five-year term was approved by Ram Nath Kovind, the president of India, in April 2019 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Akhtar has fought for gender parity and has a reputation for managing groups of people from various ethnic backgrounds. During her term, she stated that it is her intention to start a medical college at Jamia. “My intention was not to breach the glass ceiling, but I was clearly against the glass ceiling,” the university’s first female vice-chancellor said of her selection.
